![]() Never even got close to breaking even which is all I wanted to do. ![]() I remember one release having almost $1000 invested after you accounted for the payments to the original producer + the remixers. And it worked, I had several big name Dj's playing tracks from my label by artists who had never had releases and were just regular forum posters like you and I looking for feedback.īut, I also wanted quality artists so I was paying advances ranging from $50 - $500. ![]() I actively recruited on forums like Tranceaddict and tried to give those looking for an opportunity a chance at a nice release. I started the label because I wanted to advance what I deemed quality music and upcoming artists. I never started the label to make money, I wasn't that stupid, but I hoped I could at least break even. I had to get out of the "business" because my label literally turned into a money pit/fun adventure gone wrong. You think $40 is enough to secure an advance with a nice artist? Hell, $40 will hardly even buy you a good mastering job for 1 track, LOL. That left the label with a whopping $40 per release. Next, you receive your payment via paypal who takes yet another $5-10.īefore all is said and done, you're pocketing (if you're lucky) $80 per release, which you've gotta split with the artist, usually 50/50. Most tracks (at least when I ran my label) would only sell 100 - 400 copies total so you're looking at pocketing, if you're lucky, an average of about $90 per release. Next, the usual 50/50 split with the artist gives the artist 35 cents and the label 35 cents. Kiss another 20-30% of your sales goodbye!īy the time Beatport and the aggregator have taken their fee's, you're lucky as a label if you are pocketing 70 cents per track. The only way an upcoming label like mine could get on beatport is using an aggregator like Labelworx or Bonzai Digital Network. #DOWNLOAD BEATPORT PRO PROFESSIONAL#Next, Beatport made it nearly impossible for any independent/upcoming labels to establish a direct contract with them (My business associate who worked for a hedge fund literally presented in-person a professional portfolio with $100 worth of materials to their HQ in Denver). To my knowledge, no other distributor at that time took that much (though it may be different now) ![]() So if you sell a track for $1.99, they took $1 and left the label with 99 cents. What I hated about Beatport was the fact that they took 50% of the sale straight off the top. ![]()

I have some money saved, so I'm neither poor nor rich. ![]() I'm happy in clean hostels, but can splurge for proper hotels from time to time if need be. If I end up being based in NSW, ideas like "a day trip to Perth" are probably not going to work. Then again, as I learned on previous trips abroad, it's never fun to spend a huge portion of your vacation in transit. The AirPass costs different prices based on which "Zones" you visit, but I'm willing to travel anywhere if it's worth it. So, wise natives and veteran travelers, I'm dying for advice about a sequence of locations to hit and the associated can't-miss events. Additionally, I'm a SCUBA diver and would like to spend a few days diving the amazing reefs. I like city life, and while I'm not sure I want to spend time in the heart of the Outback, I'd like to spend SOME time taking in some of the natural beauty available. With the AirPass I'd have a flight into some major city, and then 3 domestic flights within Australia. If I feel compelled and ask very nicely, they'll probably let me take 3 of my weeks at once. Working way too hard and generally not having a life for the last few years has left me with gobs of paid vacation in the bank. I'd like to embark on another memorable adventure sometime in the coming months, and since I've always wanted to visit Australia it seems like a great fit. I've done the hostel thing in Europe thing before and had a great time moving from city to city, meeting new people to see the sights with by day, and soaking up the nightlife. Alchemy was a secretive and enigmatic art with endless interpretations. The ultimate goal was to turn immature base metals like lead into higher metals like gold by releasing their perfect state, or quintessence.īut what exactly was quintessence? That depends on which alchemist you ask. The theory, then, was that by distilling a substance down to its elemental form and creating the perfect balance and proportions of the different elements, you could purify matter and transmute one substance into another. Metals were all composed of the four elements, but were in different stages of maturity on their way to spiritual perfection. The underlying belief was that metals were alive and growing, and could change into other substances. The trick was freeing it.Īristotle believed the four physical elements were changeable, and alchemists took this idea and ran with it. A bit of godly essence was hidden in all things, whether animal, plant, or mineral. To them, it described the most pristine and perfect essence found in nature, which they called “quintessence.” They too saw quintessence (so named from the Latin phrase qüinta essentia, meaning “fifth essence”) as divine, but believed it was found on Earth as well as in the heavens. Derby Museum and Art GalleryĪlchemy, the magical medieval proto-science, came into vogue in the Western world in the 12th and 13th centuries, when the texts of the Greek and Arab philosophers were translated into Latin and European scholars finally got wind of these ancient ideas.Īlchemists dusted off the antique concept of aether and put a new spin on it. The Alchymist, In Search of the Philosopher’s Stone, Discovers Phosphorus, and prays for the successful Conclusion of his operation, as was the custom of the Ancient Chymical Astrologers, by Joseph Wright of Derby, now in Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Derby, U.K. In Plato’s theory of the cosmos, he writes that there are different kinds of air and “the brightest part is called the aether.” This bright, divine Aether was the classical philosophers’ version of our upper atmosphere. Aether was also a Greek god, one of the first-born deities in the pantheon, the primordial god of light and the sky. The word “aether” comes from the Greek aithêr, meaning “upper air.” The Greeks’ mythology described the pure air that the gods breathed in the heavens as opposed to the normal air breathed by mortals on Earth, and went further than that. In Greek mythology it described the pure air that the gods breathed in the heavens as opposed to the normal air breathed by mortals on Earth. It may be the most enduring imaginary concept in scientific history.Īether was invented by the ancients. Yet aether does not exist, and it never did. Centuries later, early modern scientists like René Descartes and Nikola Tesla were still pointing to aether to explain fundamental natural phenomena like gravity and light. To the medieval alchemists, it was the fabled philosopher’s stone that could turn lead into gold and prolong life. Ancient Greeks saw aether as the god of light and the fifth element of the universe.
